Nellie’s nine years of service in China
Australia

(All information on this page is from the Church Missionary Society unless otherwise stated.)

Once Nellie had made up her mind to join the CMS and work as a missionary in China, events were organised for her farewell. (The CMS’s Gleaners magazine reported on these events when she was actually in China. The delay can be attributed to the correspondent having to write the “piece”, then it be ratified by the local CMS office, transmit to CMS London, printed, and then distributed.)

The first we know of Nellie’s intention to go to China and work as a missionary, was reported in the Gleaners Magazine 1st May 1920. She attended a farewell evening on 20th July 1920, a month before she landed in Hong Kong, where she was presented with a gold wristwatch and a cheque.

The report also stated that she sailed for China with Miss Barber on 30th July 1920 aboard the “Tango Maru”. This was reported in the Gleaners Magazine 1st August 1920.
